Report on Company Foundations June 2021: Startup Figures on the Rise again

A total of 4941 companies were founded in Switzerland in June 2021. The results of May 2021 were exceeded by 26.85%. Compared to June 2020, the number of startups increased by 10.19%. The summer slump thus seems to have been overcome for the time being and the number of startups is on the upswing again.

Foundation figures on the rise again

In June 2021, 4941 company foundations were recorded in Switzerland. Both the results of the previous month and the previous year were exceeded. Compared to May 2021, the number of new companies increased by 1046 startups (+26.85%). Compared to June 2020, the number of startups has risen by 457 startups (+10.19%). The results in the language regions are also consistently positive. Compared to the previous month, startup numbers have increased by 848 startups (+33.13%) in German-speaking Switzerland, 151 startups in French-speaking Switzerland (+13.06%) and 47 startups (+26.26%) in Ticino. Compared to the previous year, the increase amounts to 384 startups (+12.70%) in German-speaking Switzerland, 27 startups (+2.11%) in French-speaking Switzerland and +46 startups (+25.56%) in Ticino.

Mainly positive change compared to previous month

Compared to May 2021, the number of startups increased in most cantons. In particular, the cantons with strong foundation rates recorded significant increases. The increase amounts to 82 startups (+32.54%) in Aargau, 128 startups (+36.26%) in Berne, 72 startups (+20.45%) in Geneva, 21 startups (+10.94%) in Lucerne, 109 startups (+60. 56%) in St.Gallen, 47 startups (+26.26%) in Ticino, 39 startups (+10.29%) in Vaud, 157 startups (+84.86%) in Zug and 133 startups (+19.56%) in Zurich. The number of startups decreased only in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden with 2 startups less (-6.90%), Glarus with 14 startups less (-56.00%) and Valais with 17 startups less (-7.83%) than in the previous month.

Mixed results in comparison with the previous year

A comparison with the foundation figures of June 2020 shows a mixed picture. In most foundation-strong cantons, the number of newly founded companies has increased. The increase amounts to 51 startups (+18.02%) in Aargau, 6 startups (+1.26%) in Berne, 43 startups (+11.29%) in Geneva, 22 startups (+11.52%) in Lucerne, 57 startups (+24.57%) in St.Gallen, 46 startups (+25.56%) in Ticino, 132 startups (+62.86%) in Zug and 59 startups (+7.82%) in Zurich. Only in the canton of Vaud did the foundation number fall slightly, with two fewer startups than in the previous year (-0.99%). In total, eight cantons recorded a decrease. Proportionally, the cantons most affected by the decline are Appenzell Innerrhoden (-6 startups or -33.33%), Appenzell Ausserrhoden (-11 startups or -28.95%) and Thurgau (-25 startups or -16.78%).
