Report on Company Foundations January 2021: Moderate start into the new year

In comparison with the record year 2020, the January 2021 startup report shows moderate figures. With a total of 3625 company foundations, the start into the new year is quite average. Compared to December 2020, the number of startups has decreased by -17.69%. Compared to January 2020, the decrease results to -3.85%.

Significant decreases recorded

With the start of 2021, the counter for company foundations was set to zero again. After the past year which offered a roller coaster ride concerning the start-up figures, one can be curious about how the numbers will develop in 2021. The start into the new year turns out to be quite moderate. In January 2021, a total of 3625 companies were founded in Switzerland. Compared to December 2020, the number of startups has thus decreased by -779 startups or -17.69%. While a decline towards the end of the year is not unusual, the number of company formations has also decreased compared to January of the previous year. Compared to January 2020, there were -145 fewer startups. This corresponds to a decrease of -3.85%.

Ticino most affected in percentage terms

The above mentioned decline is clearly visible in the individual language regions. Compared to December 2020, the number of company formations has fallen in all three parts of the country. In German-speaking Switzerland, the decrease amounts to -397 startups (-13.61%), in French-speaking Switzerland -308 startups (-24.56%) and in Ticino -74 startups (-31.90%). In comparison with January of the previous year, the number of company foundations decreased in French-speaking Switzerland (-187 startups or -16.50%) and in Ticino (-40 startups or -20.20%). German-speaking Switzerland, on the other hand, managed to improve its result by +82 startups (+3.36%).

Only Nidwalden and Solothurn better than in December

Most cantons did not manage to surpass its values of December 2020. In particular, the number of company foundations fell in the cantons with usually strong foundation numbers. The decrease in the cantons amounts to -10 startups (-3.80%) in Aargau, -74 startups (-18.93%) in Berne, -73 startups (-34.43%) in Lucerne, -55 foundations (-24. 89%) in St.Gallen, -74 startups (-31.90%) in Ticino, -99 startups (-23.08%) in Vaud, -50 start-ups (-19.84%) in Zug and -56 startups (-7.75%) in Zurich. In percentage terms, the cantons most affected by the decline are Jura (-25 start-ups or -52.08%) and Glarus (-10 start-ups or -43.48%). Only the cantons of Nidwalden (+ 1 foundation or +5.00%) and Solothurn (+2 foundations or +1.89%) recorded a slight increase.

Uneven picture compared to the previous year

When comparing the foundation figures of January 2021 with those of the previous year, no clear picture emerges. While some cantons have recorded declines, others show a noticeable increase in the number of newly founded startups. Of the cantons with usually strong foundation numbers only the cantons of Aargau (+27 startups or +11.95%), Zug (+33 startups or +19.53%) and Zurich (+8 startups or +1.21%) demonstrate an increase. On the other hand, the number of startups decreased in the cantons of Berne (-51 startups or -13.86%), Lucerne (-11 startups or -7.33%), St.Gallen (-39 startups or -19.02%), Ticino (-40 startups or -20.20%) and Vaud (-68 startups or -17.09%). A significant increase in the number of newly founded companies shows especially the canton of Uri which recorded an excellent result with +10 foundations or +250.00%.
