Report on Company Foundations February 2021: New February Record High

After a mixed start into the new year, the number of startups rose again last month. In February 2021, a total of 4386 companies were founded in Switzerland. The foundation figures of the previous month were exceeded by 17.68% and those of the previous year by 10.84%.

Over 4000 new companies in Switzerland

In February 2021, 4386 companies were founded in Switzerland. This is the highest figure for the month of February since STARTUPS.CH began keeping records in 2013. The individual language regions reported predominantly positive results as well. Compared to January 2021, the numbers in German-speaking Switzerland have increased by 342 startups (13.20%), in French-speaking Switzerland by 297 startups (30.46%) and in Ticino by 20 startups (12.35%). Compared to February 2020, the number of startups increased in German-speaking Switzerland (361 startups or 14.04%) and French-speaking Switzerland (105 startups or 9.00%). Ticino, however, recorded a decline of 37 startups (-16.89%).

Increasing numbers in the Canton of Berne compared to previous month

The number of new companies rose significantly in all cantons with strong startup activity compared to the previous month. The increase amounts to 15 startups (+5.79%) in Aargau, 138 startups (+41.82%) in Berne, 81 startups (+29.35%) in Geneva, 36 startups (+25.00%) in Lucerne, 44 startups (+25.14%) in St.Gallen, 20 startups (+12.35%) in Ticino, 103 startups (+30.47%) in Vaud, 64 startups (+31.53%) in Zug and 65 startups (+9.48%) in Zurich. The smaller cantons on the other hand show declining foundation numbers. The number of new companies fell in the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (-1 startup or -14.29%), Basel-Landschaft (-15 startups or -13.89%), Glarus (-3 startups or -23.08%), Graubünden (-4 startups or -4. 26%), Neuchâtel (-1 startup or -1.30%), Nidwalden (-9 startups or -42.86%), Schaffhausen (-8 startups or -24.24%), Schwyz (-12 startups or -9.45%), Thurgau (-5 startups or -3.65%) and Uri (-5 startups or -35.71%).

Comparison with previous year shows mixed picture

A look at the foundation ratio in February 2020 vs. 2021 shows mixed values. While the number of company foundations has increased noticeably in some cantons, others have recorded significant declines. Of the cantons with strong startup activity, the cantons of Aargau (+40 startups or +17.09%), Berne (+155 startups or +49.52%), Vaud (+68 start-ups or +18.23%), Zug (+91 startups or +51.70%) and Zurich (+53 startups or +7.59%) improved their numbers. However, less companies were founded in the cantons of Geneva (-12 startups or -3.25%), Lucerne (-4 startups or -2.17%), St.Gallen (-2 startups or -0.90%) and Ticino (-37 startups or -16.89%). Furthermore, the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (-6 startups or -50.00%), Basel-Landschaft (-13 startups or -12.26%), Glarus (-11 startups or -52.38%), Nidwalden (-12 startups or -50.00%), and Obwalden (-4 start-ups or -16.00%) recorded declines. On a more positive note, the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden can be pleased about the comparatively strongest increase with 10 additional foundations (+55.56%).
