Report on Company Foundations August 2020: A record knacked despite the crash of the foundation numbers

In August 2020, 3327 companies were founded. Despite a decrease of over a thousand start-up foundations compared to the previous month, August 2020 managed to break a record. Find out in the article which one it is.

Strong foundation numbers in August 2020 compared to previous years

Although the number of start-ups has fallen massively compared to July 2020, the past month still broke a record. With 3327 company foundations, August 2020 is the strongest August since the beginning of STARTUPS.CH’s records. This is despite the fact that there were 1233 fewer start-ups founded than in July 2020. Nevertheless, there was an increase compared to August of the previous year. In August 2020, 507 more companies were founded than in August 2019. Once again 2020 proves to be a special year.

Few differences in the language regions

In all language regions, there was a decline in the number of start-ups compared to July 2020. While the number of start-ups in German-speaking Switzerland fell by 24.82 percent (-738 start-ups), the decrease in French-speaking Switzerland was 32 percent (-440 start-ups) and in Ticino 25.94 percent (-55 start-ups). In spite of this striking decrease, August 2020 is still significantly better than last year’s August. Compared to the 2019 figures, there was an increase of 20.16 percent (+375 start-ups) in German-speaking Switzerland, 13.47 percent (+111 start-ups) in French-speaking Switzerland and 15.44 percent (+21 start-ups) in Ticino.

Decline in all cantons with a strong foundation rate compared to July 2020

A similar picture is presented by the individual cantons. Compared to July 2020, there is a decline of 33.15 percent (-122 start-ups) in Bern, 25.14 percent (-93 start-ups) in Geneva, 25.98 percent (-53 start-ups) in Lucerne, 25.94 percent (-5 start-ups) in Ticino, 30.34 percent (-142 start-ups) in Vaud and 22.01 percent (-171 start-ups) in Zurich. Basel-Land with 19 new companies (+21.84 percent) more than in the previous month, and Obwalden with 3 additional start-ups (+15 percent) as only cantons presented an uprise in the foundation numbers.

Predominant increase compared to August 2019

Compared to August 2019, the same cantons show an increase in the number of new companies founded. This amounts to 2.5 percent (+6 start-ups) in Bern, 5.73 percent (+15 start-ups) in Geneva, 20.8 percent (+26 start-ups) in Lucerne, 15.44 percent (+21 start-ups) in Ticino, 1.88 percent (+6 start-ups) in Vaud and 16.31 percent (+85 start-ups) in Zurich. Where there are winners, there are also losers. Basel-City with 10 fewer start-ups (-10.99 percent) and the Jura with 2 start-ups (-14.29 percent) less are the only cantons to report a decline compared to the previous year.
