Market analysis based on data from Public Records

The data from public records such as the Central Business Name Index (Zefix) give a first overview of a company. The data comes from the cantonal commercial register and is free. Commercial business information portals have mostly specialized on specific branches and have detailed information.

Public Records

How comprehensive is the data?

Public Records are documents or pieces of information that are not considered confidential. All corporations in Switzerland, collective/partnerships, sole proprietorships and companies with an annual turnover of more than CHF 100’000 must be registered in a commercial register.

The Central Business Names Index Switzerland (www.zefix.ch, free) allows a query of all commercial registries. Various information (e.g .capital owners, institutions, founding date, mutations, company shares, etc.) can be found on Zefix. Besides the public Zefix there are numerous free and paid business information platforms. Attached some links:

What are the costs?

Government agencies are usually free. Commercial providers offer data often based on a „freemium” business model. Freemium means the basics are offered and further services will be charged.
