October Start-Up Report: With Significant Growth into the Fourth Quarter

In October the willingness to start up new businesses in Switzerland continues to grow unabatedly. As shown in the latest start-up report by STARTUPS.CH, last month as many as 3,576 new organisations were registered with the Commercial Register. This represents a growth of 12.59% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Continuous Growth

This year every month since May saw more organisations being registered with the Commercial Register than in the preceding month of the previous year. The trend remains unchanged also in October. In total, 3,576 new companies have been registered with the Commercial Register. This represents a growth of 12.59% compared with October of 2016. Compared with the previous month, 7.55% more new registrations were made.

Differences Between Cantons

Not all cantons can benefit from this pleasing trend, however. The growth is owed, above all, to a few cantons with the highest number of registrations. For instance, the canton of Zug with its share of 5.43% in all new registrations shows a growth of 41.61% compared with the previous year. For new registrations, Bern with its share of 7.91% could record an increase of 25.78%. In the canton of Neuchâtel, which, with its share of 2.1%, is usually rather among those with the lowest number of registrations, even 97.37% more organisations were registered with the Commercial Register.

In some cantons, however, the number of new registrations has been found to be partially on the decline. Fortunately, this applies to those cantons where the number of new registrations normally tends to be low. Specifically, these are the cantons of Glarus (share: 0.22%; decrease by 46.67%), Uri (share 0.17%; decrease by 25%), Appenzell Ausserrhoden (share: 0.56%; decrease by 9.09%) and Nidwalden (share: 0.59%; decrease by 8.7%).

Ticino has also been badly hit, as it could not record any growth since as long as May. This is an alarming development. The previous month saw 10.04% less organisations being registered than in October of 2016. This development is also reflected in Ticino’s share in the total number of registrations. Whereas in October 2016 its share was still 7.21%, this year it is only 5.76%.
