The dream of flying gets a step closer with the Flyer

The Flyer – technical information

The Flyer features two pontoons supporting a web-like platform. Above this are the seat and controls. The aircraft is powered by eight rotors that allow it to take off and land like a helicopter, even on water. The entire construction weighs just 100 kg, enabling it to reach speeds of 40 km/h and an altitude of 4.5m. With an intuitive user interface, the Flyer is designed to carry just one person.

Blogger Cimeron Morrissey has been lucky enough to take The Flyer on a short trip. In a post she described how it was like using a motorbike and how it gave her an ecstatic feeling of lightweight, ultimate freedom.

For US$100, you can take out a three-year membership of the company and be placed on the waiting list. Although the price has not yet been decided, initial deliveries are planned for later this year. And if you’re outside the US, you face an additional hurdle. Despite plans for global distribution, delivery is currently planned only for within the US.

The company

Behind this revolutionary aircraft is the Mountain View, CA based start-up Kitty Hawk. Its managing director is the informatics and robotics specialist Prof. Sebastian Thrun, a former Stanford University professor and former vice-president of Google. Hardly surprising, then, that Google founder Larry Page is one of the company’s major investors.
