Start-Up Report for June 2017: Strong Growth Continues
June is traditionally a good month for start-ups. With a total of 4,125 new trade register entries, this year the development turned out to be especially good. Compared with the last four years, this is a new peak value. Compared with the previous year, this means a growth rate of 1.25%, compared with the previous month, this is none other than a 16.89% growth.
Strong Differences Between Language Areas
As the latest start-up report shows, not all language areas could equally benefit from growth. Most start-ups were launched in the German-speaking part of Switzerland (2,755, share: 66.79%). Compared with the previous month, a very high growth rate of 20.36% was recorded. Compared with the previous year, however, the growth was close to none (+0.55%).
The French-speaking part of Switzerland with its 1,166 start-ups, which accounts for a share of 28.27%, comes second. This means a strong growth compared with both the previous month (+14.09%) and the previous year (+8.67%).
In the canton of Ticino, however, a strong decline in the number of new start-ups is being recorded. In June just as few as 204 new registrations were made their way into the trade register (share: 4.95%). Compared with the previous month, this number dropped by 6.42%. Compared with the previous year, the registrations were in general made less often, with its number falling by 21.84%.
Seasonal Fluctuation
As shown by surveys conducted by STARTUPS.CH over the last four years, a strong seasonal fluctuation can be recorded. Most start-ups are established as at the end of the year. June is usually the month with the highest number of start-ups throughout the year, followed by summer holidays with August in which setbacks are mostly the deepest. Except for April, this year’s figures were generally very good. Accordingly, the summer holidays are being expected with excitement.
