3951 new companies were founded in Switzerland in September 2024. This corresponds to an increase of 11.05% compared to September of the previous year and an increase of 3.29% compared to the previous month (3825).
2024 vs. 2023
The year 2024 continues to prove to be a strong year for start-ups. Between January and September 2024, 39166 start-ups were registered, which corresponds to a change of +2.18% compared to the previous year. In 2023, 38331 start-ups were counted in the same period.
Romandie on the rise again
1186 new start-ups were counted in French-speaking Switzerland, which corresponds to a change of +17.78% compared to August 2024. The region not only scored well compared to the previous month, but also compared to the previous year. Compared to last September, 10.84% more commercial register entries were recorded. Geneva (+16.84%) and Fribourg (+45.00%) in particular recorded a positive trend.
Northwestern Switzerland also recorded growth. While 729 start-ups were counted in August, this figure rose to 868 in September, which corresponds to an increase of 19.07%. Bern recorded a significant increase with 322 new start-ups, which corresponds to growth of 26.27% compared to the previous month and 7.69% compared to the previous year.
Mixed picture in Zurich
In Zurich, 704 new companies were entered in the commercial register, representing a change of -1.12% compared to the previous month of August. However, this decline is not reflected in the year-on-year comparison, where an increase of 6.99% was recorded.
The picture is also mixed in Central Switzerland. The total of 538 new start-ups corresponds to an increase of 3.46% compared to the previous month. Last year, however, 4.44% more companies were founded than in the current year.
The relative change compared to the previous month in Eastern Switzerland was +7.59% and the number of start-ups totalled 496. This puts the region 4.80 percentage points behind the 2023 figure.
Ticino recovers
After Ticino recorded a sharp decline in the number of new start-ups last month, the region was able to make strong gains again in September compared to the previous month. 159 new companies were founded, which corresponds to an increase of 23.26 percentage points. The change compared to last September was -1.85%.
Outlook
The autumn saw an upturn in the number of new companies. This increase between August and September has also been observed in previous years. The October wind blew even more start-ups into Switzerland, which is why we expect further growth in October 2024.
