Self-Employment Makes You Happy

As studies by Kelly Services show, employees’ satisfaction has been on the decline for decades. At the same time the number of the self-employed is steadily rising. What distinguishes them is that they are often happier. More job satisfaction is especially owed to the freedom and flexibility self-employment gives you.

Job Satisfaction Is Going Down

Compared globally, job satisfaction has dramatically dropped over recent years. This comes from a study by Kelly Services, a worldwide specialist in personnel services. Pursuant to this 2013 poll, in which more than 100,000 employees from all over the world were questioned, 48% of all the respondents were dissatisfied with their current jobs. This is reflected in a high job turnover. In the survey, 62% of Australians claimed to have their jobs for less than a year, which is really a peak value. With its 50%, Switzerland is ranked ten.

Surprisingly, 55% of the respondents said that they were looking for a new job even though they were satisfied with the one they just had. According to 38% of those interviewed, work-life balance was the most important factor influencing their choice of job and job satisfaction. The second important factor (29%) was opportunities for professional improvement. Pay (26%) came third.

Increasingly More Opt for Self-Employment

Another study by Kelly from 2015 shows that increasingly more employees choose to be self-employed. In this survey 31% of the respondents claimed to be working on their own. On the other hand, 56% of them said that they had decided to be self-employed to get more freedom and flexibility. Twenty per cent claimed that entrepreneurship was what they felt to be driven by. In addition, 64% of the self-employed argued that they were happy because they could organise their work around their lives, and not the other way around. Moreover, 61% were pleased because they could take on more responsibility. This translates into significantly higher levels of job satisfaction than it is the case with employees.
