Report on Company Foundations October 2021: Startup figures remain at a stable level
In October 2021, 3694 companies were founded in Switzerland. While the number of startups increased by 1.74% compared to September 2021, they decreased by 6.62% in comparison with October 2020.

Hardly any changes in the Startup figures
A total of 3694 companies were founded in Switzerland in October 2021. Compared to September 2021, 63 more startups (+1.74%) were recorded. In contrast, the number of startups decreased by 262 startups (-6.62%) in comparison with October 2020. The situation looks similar in the three language regions. While the number of startups in German-speaking Switzerland (+46 startups or +1.93%) and Ticino (+25 startups or +16.03) increased compared to the previous month, the startup up figures in French-speaking Switzerland declined slightly (-8 startups or -0.73%). In comparison with the previous year, the number of startups decreased in German-speaking Switzerland (-188 startups or -7.18%), in French-speaking Switzerland (-64 startups or -5.57%) as well as in Ticino (-10 startups or -5.24%).
Appenzell Ausserrhoden records the largest increase
Although an overall similar number of companies as in September 2021 were founded in October 2021, the startup figures in the individual cantons have changed compared to the previous month. Of the cantons with high foundation rates, the cantons of Aargau (+4 startups or +1.69%), Geneva (+32 startups or +10.77%), St.Gallen (+24 startups or 12.12%), Ticino (+25 startups or +16.03%), Zug (+51 startups or +27.42%) and Zurich (+25 startups or +4.07%) recorded a rise. In contrast, the number of newly founded companies decreased in the cantons of Berne (-6 startups or -2.07%), Lucerne (-30 startups or -16.13%) and Vaud (-40 startups or -10.47%). The relatively largest increase was recorded in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (+7 startups or -38.89%).
Obwalden with largest decrease compared to previous year
The startup figures of October 2020 were not reached by most cantons. For example, the numbers declined in the cantons of Aargau (-3 startups or -1.23%), Berne (-25 startups or -8.09%), Geneva (-29 startups or -8.10%), Lucerne (-20 startups or -11.36%), Ticino (-10 startups or -5.24%), Vaud (-64 startups or -15.76%) and Zurich (-51 startups or -7.39%). Of the cantons with high foundation rates only the cantons of St.Gallen (+26 startups or +13.27%) and Zug (+25 startups or +11.79%) recorded a rise. The relatively largest increase is attributable to the canton of Uri (+6 start-ups or +85.71%). In contrast, the canton of Obwalden recorded the relatively strongest decrease (-11 startups or -64.71%).
