Report on Company Foundations November 2020: Previous year’s result exceeded by over 15 percent
The foundation figures for November 2020 show the usual increasing numbers towards the end of the year. With a total of 4175 new companies, this year’s November is the strongest month regarding company foundations so far. The result of the previous year was exceeded by a whopping 15.27%. A comparison with the figures of October 2020 shows an increase of 5.54%.
Increase towards the end of the year
The foundation figures for November 2020 already show the increase in the number of new companies usually occurring towards the end of the year. With a total of 4175 foundations, the past month is the strongest November since STARTUPS.CH began recording in 2013. The record series that began in June continues unabated. A comparison with the figures for November 2019 shows that the previous year’s result was exceeded by 15.27% (+553 foundations). Compared to the results of October 2020, an increase of 5.54% (+219 foundations) was recorded.
Decreasing numbers in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino
While German-speaking Switzerland recorded an increase of 9.82% (+257 start-ups) compared to the previous month, the figures in French-speaking Switzerland (-3.05% or -35 start-ups) and Ticino (-1.57% or -3 start-ups) fell slightly. This is different from the comparison with the results of the previous year, which did not show any negative results. In both German-speaking Switzerland (+20.4% or +487 start-ups) and French-speaking Switzerland (+6.3% or +66 start-ups), there were more company foundations in November 2020 than in the same month of the previous year. Ticino did not experience any changes, as the number of 188 start-ups is identical to the previous year’s figure.
Mixed cantonal results in comparison with the October figures
Compared to October 2020, the cantons with usually high foundation numbers have predominantly positive numbers to report. The figures have increased in the cantons of Berne (+15.53% or +48 start-ups), Geneva (+2.79% or +10 start-ups), Lucerne (+52.84% or +93 start-ups), Zug (+25.94% and +55 start-ups) and Zurich (+7.97% or +55 start-ups). Of the cantons with a strong usually strong foundation numbers, only the canton of Vaud (-15.03% or -61 foundations) reported a decrease. Furthermore, the figures in the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhodes (-20% or -3 start-ups), Basel-Land (-19.51% or -24 start-ups), Basel-City (-6.93 or -7 start-ups), Jura (-25% or -7 start-ups), Nidwalden (-50% or -16 start-ups), St.Gallen (-3.06% or -6 start-ups), Thurgau (-15.32% or -17 start-ups) and Ticino (-1.57% or -3 start-ups) decreased.
Predominantly positive results compared to the previous year
Compared with the results of November 2019, the cantons with usually strong foundation numbers have without exception recorded rises. The figures increased in the cantons of Berne (+14.42% or +45 start-ups), Geneva (+10.51% or +35 start-ups), Lucerne (+52.84 or +93 start-ups), Vaud (+2.07 or +7 start-ups), Zug (+34.17% or +68 start-ups) and Zurich (+19.2% or +120 start-ups). Only in the cantons of Jura (-25% or -7 start-ups), Neuchâtel (-15.94% or -11 start-ups), Schaffhausen (-3.03% or -1 start-ups), Thurgau (-6% or -6 start-ups) and Uri (-55% or -11 foundations) was there a decrease.
After this rise in the number of start-ups founded towards the end of the year, we can look forward to the results of December 2020.
