Report on Company Foundations January 2022: New year starts with record high
In January 2022 a total number of 3812 companies were founded in Switzerland. Although the results of January 2021 were exceeded by 2.28%, there was a 22.96% decline in the number of startups in comparison with December 2021.
Strong start into the new year
The year has barely begun and the first foundation record has already been recorded. In January 2022, there were a total of 3812 new entries in Switzerland’s commercial register. This makes last month the January with the highest number of startups ever since STARTUPS.CH started keeping records in 2013. While the number of newly founded companies increased compared to January 2021 (+85 startups or +2.28%), a significant drop was noted in comparison with December 2021 (-1136 startups or -22.96%).
Declining numbers only in Ticino
A look at the individual language regions paints a similar picture. Compared to the previous month, the number of startups fell in German-speaking Switzerland (-740 startups or -21.75%), in French-speaking Switzerland (-283 startups or -21.89%) as well as in Ticino (-113 start-ups or -44.66%). On the other hand, the number of newly founded companies increased in both German-speaking Switzerland (+72 startups or +2.78%) and French-speaking Switzerland (+35 startups or +3.59%) compared to January 2021. Only in Ticino (-22 startups or -13.58%), which has already recorded the largest decline in comparison December 2021, have the foundations numbers slightly decreased.
Only three cantons show increase compared to December 2021
As the overall results already suggest, the number of new entries in the commercial register has also declined in the majority of cantons. Among others, the cantons with high foundation rates Aargau (-31 startups or -10.80%), Berne (-84 startups or -19.76%), Geneva (-92 start-ups or -24.66%), Lucerne (-92 startups or -37.70%), St. Gallen (-140 startups or -41.06%), Ticino (-113 startups or -44.66%), Vaud (-64 startups or -14.38%), Zug (-141 startups or -38.32%) and Zurich (-100 startups or -12.35%) recorded decreases. The proportionally strongest decline was noted in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden (-10 startups or -52.36%). Only in the cantons of Basel-Landschaft (+8 startups or +8.00%), Schaffhausen (+2 startups or +5.71%) and Uri (+2 startups or +22.22%) has the number of newly founded companies risen.
Mainly positive results in comparison with January 2021
Compared to last year, the number of startups increased in the startup-strong cantons of Berne (+11 startups or +3.33%), Geneva (+5 startups or +1.81%), Lucerne (+8 startups or (+5.56%), St.Gallen (+26 startups or +14.86%), Vaud (+43 startups or +12.72%), Zug (+24 startups or +11.82%) and Zurich (+24 startups or +3.50%). Of the cantons with high foundation rates merely the cantons of Aargau (-3 startups or -1.16%) and Ticino (-22 start-ups or -13.58) recorded slight declines. In relative terms, the strongest decrease concerns the canton of Neuchâtel (-34 startups or -44.16%). In contrast, the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, which is lagging behind compared to the previous month, benefits from the relatively strongest increase (+2 startups or +28.57%).
