Report on Company Foundations for September 2022: just missed the 4,000 mark!

In September 2022, 3,999 companies were founded in Switzerland. This represents an increase of 10.13% compared to September 2021 and 16.72% compared to August 2022.

Upward trend after a rather quiet end of summer 2022

With a total of 3,999 newly founded companies throughout Switzerland, September 2022 is the strongest September since STARTUPS.CH began publishing its monthly reports and thus represents a new record. Compared to the previous year and the previous month, the number of company foundations increased significantly.

Increase throughout Switzerland

All regions recorded positive results and were able to improve compared to the previous month as well as to the previous year.

Only the cantons of Zug (-14.12%), Obwalden (-42.86%) and Graubünden (-7.23%) recorded fewer incorporations than in August 2022. All other cantons recorded an increase. The canton of Jura stands out with twice the number of company foundations than in August 2022 (+110.53%).

Growth in Eastern and Northwestern Switzerland

In North-Western Switzerland, the number of incorporations increased by 29.20% compared to August 2022, which was rather quiet. But Eastern Switzerland also presents green numbers with an increase of 15.85% compared to the previous month. This is due to the extremely positive results of the cantons of Basel-Stadt (+44.16%) and Schaffhausen (+84.62%). With the exception of the cantons of Graubünden and Thurgau, all other cantons in this region recorded increases of between 15% and 30%.

Stagnation in Central Switzerland

In Central Switzerland, the total number of business incorporations increased by only 1.70% compared to the previous year. The significant result of Nidwalden (+63.16%) could not compensate for the lower figures in the canton of Lucerne (-13.44%), especially as other cantons in the region also did not perform well compared to the previous year (Obwalden -29.41% and Uri -27.27%).

Ticino outperforms French-speaking Switzerland

Ticino was the best performer both in comparison with the previous month (+26.58%) and with the previous year (+28.21%). By contrast, French-speaking Switzerland does not yet seem to have fully recovered from the summer holidays. With a growth of only 4.85% compared to the previous year, it is to be hoped that the autumn will again stimulate business start-ups in French-speaking Switzerland.
