Report on Company Foundations for October 2022: Previous year’s results just surpassed!
In October 2022, 3860 companies were founded in Switzerland. This is an increase of 4.44% compared to the previous year. Compared to the previous month, September 2022, the numbers have decreased by 3.48%.
September 2022 record month
With a total of of 3,999 newly founded companies throughout Switzerland, September 2022 was the strongest September since STARTUPS.CH started publishing monthly reports. These figures could however not be surpassed in October. Compared to the previous year, the numbers of startups increased significantly and there are many indications of a record autumn.
Basel-Land with the only increase in Northwestern Switzerland
In Northwestern Switzerland, the number of startups fell by between 13%-24% compared to September 2022 in almost all cantons, except in the canton of Basel-Land, where startups increased by around 10%.
Mixed figures in Eastern Switzerland
There were large fluctuations between the number of new businesses founded in the cantons of Eastern Switzerland.
The cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (+18.18%), Glarus (+5%), Graubünden (+11.69%) and St. Gallen (+0.96%) were able to record increases compared to the previous month.
The numbers decreased in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (-27.27%), Schaffhausen (-50%) and Thurgau (-7.27%).
Boom in the Canton of Obwalden
In Central Switzerland, the numbers for the canton of Obwalden in particular stand out positively. Compared to the previous month, these have increased by 58.33% and even by an impressive 216.67% compared to the previous year.
The figures for the canton of Uri are more negative. Compared to the previous month, these have fallen by 37.5% and compared to the previous year by 61.54%.
However, the overall figures in Central Switzerland have risen by 1.67% and 5.8% respectively compared to both the previous month and the previous year.
Slight increase in French-speaking Switzerland and decrease in Ticino
The French-speaking part of Switzerland was able to slightly exceed the peak figures of the previous month of September, with one more start-up (+0.09%). Compared to the previous year, the region recorded stable growth of 5.25%.
Ticino recorded a decrease of 12% compared to the previous month and a slight decrease of 2.76% compared to the previous year.
Stable Canton of Zurich
The numbers in the canton of Zurich increased by 0.84% and 12.36%, respectively, compared to both the previous month and the previous year.
