Report on Company Foundations April 2021: Foundation Figures on the Downfall
In April 2021, 4372 companies were founded in Switzerland. Although the number of startups decreased by 13.34% compared to March 2021, the result of April 2020 was exceeded by 60.03%.

Foundation record despite declining numbers
Although the number of startups at the beginning of the second quarter of 2021 is on the decline, a foundation record was broken once again. With a total of 4372 new companies, April 2021 is the April with the highest foundation numbers since STARTUPS.CH began its records in 2013. While a comparison with March 2021 shows a decrease of 673 startups (-13.34%), the startup figures have increased by 1640 startups (+60.03%) compared to April 2020. The foundation figures in the various language regions show a similar picture. Compared to the previous month, the number of startups in German-speaking Switzerland decreased by 481 startups (-14.01%), in French-speaking Switzerland by 178 startups (-12.89%) and in Ticino by 14 startups (-6.09%). Compared to April of the previous year, the number of startups increased by 912 startups in German-speaking Switzerland (+44.68%), by 623 startups in French-speaking Switzerland (+107.41%) and by 105 startups in Ticino (+94.59%).
Increase compared to March 2021 only in three cantons
Compared to the previous month, the number of startups decreased in almost all cantons. Among others, none of the cantons with usually strong foundation figures recorded an increase. Rather, the number of company foundations decreased in the cantons of Aargau (-50 startups or -15.92%), Berne (-4 startups or -0.95%), Geneva (-31 startups or -7.81%), Lucerne (-13 startups or -6. 37%), St.Gallen (-26 startups or -10.24%), Ticino (-14 startups or -6.09%), Vaud (-46 startups or -9.77%), Zug (-43 startups or -14.38%) and Zurich (-156 startups or -16.76%). In percentage terms, the decrease is greatest in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, with 30 startups less (-65.22%). Only the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (+1 startup or +11.11%), Obwalden (+1 startup or +6.67%) and Schwyz (+7 startup or +5.26%) reported an increase compared to March 2021.
All cantons show increase compared to April 2020
A look at the foundation figures of the previous year shows a completely different picture. Compared to April 2020, all cantons recorded an increase. The number of company foundations increased in the foundation-strong cantons of Aargau (+63 startups or +31.34%), Berne (+178 startups or +74.79%), Geneva (+231 startups or +171.11%), Lucerne (+66 startups or +52. 80%), St.Gallen (+67 startups or +41.61%), Ticino (+105 startups or +94.59%), Vaud (+214 startups or +101.42%), Zug (+83 startups or +47.98%) and Zurich (+218 startups or +39.14%). The increase is proportionally strongest in the canton of Schaffhausen (+21 startups or +190.91%).
