Report on Company Foundations for August 2022: Overall Decrease compared to the previous Month
In August 2022, 3,426 companies were founded in Switzerland. Compared to the previous month, this corresponds to a decrease of 15.16%. Compared to the previous year, however, there was an increase of 5.42%.
August with the fewest incorporations, as always
For some years now, August has been considered the month with the fewest number of business incorporations, which is most likely due to the holiday period. Nevertheless, the number of business start-ups in August has never been as high as this year, with 3,426 new businesses, 186 more than in August 2021.
Decline in all regions compared to the previous month
The decline in business foundations compared to the previous month was observed in all regions of Switzerland. The largest decline was recorded in Northern Switzerland with -20.05%, while Zurich posted -17.25% and French-speaking Switzerland -17.70%. In contrast, the declines in Eastern Switzerland, Central Switzerland and Ticino were not as drastic, with -10.05%, -5.58% and -5.39% respectively.
Overall increase compared to the previous year
Despite the negative figures compared to the previous month, the figures for all regions are consistently positive compared to last year. In Ticino, the number of new businesses even increased by 20.61%, while in the other regions the increase ranged from 0.94% (Eastern Switzerland) to 9.14% (Western Switzerland).
Differences between cantons
Although the regions as a whole show only positive figures in comparison with the previous year, the individual cantons show different developments.
In particular, the cantons of Basel Land, Schwyz and Uri show significant decreases between -22.77% (Basel-Land) and -40% (Uri), while Solothurn, Jura, Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Obwalden can look back on a large increase between +28.09% (Fribourg) and +110% (Obwalden).
For the leader cantons in terms of business incorporations (Aargau, Bern, Geneva, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Vaud and Zug) the figures vary overall, compared to the previous year, between -2.83% (Bern) and +9.42% (Aargau).
