Press release: Approximately 4% fewer new businesses founded in the first quarter of 2022

Decrease compared to the previous year

According to a survey by STARTUPS.CH, the number business incorporations fell by around 4% in the first quarter of 2022. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, when 13,166 companies were founded, 12,695 companies were founded at the beginning of this year. The decline was noticeable in almost all regions, particularly in northwestern Switzerland, where a 10% drop was recorded. Among the leading cantons, Berne was at the bottom of the list with a 13% decline.

An uncertain future because of the coronavirus and the war in Ukraine

According to Michele Blasucci, CEO of STARTUPS.CH, the decline in business incorporations was due to the sharp increase in the number of Covid infections at the beginning of the year and the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Indeed, the war in Ukraine continues to create uncertainty among young entrepreneurs. An improvement will only be possible once the situation in Ukraine has stabilised.
