Mompreneurs are on the rise

In the US more and more women are founding their own businesses while also being moms. This US-based trend is also spreading to Switzerland.

When becoming mothers women are mostly faced to choose between their career and children. Few employers offer flexible working arrangements that really allow having a family and a job. To put an end to this some women have taken matters in their own hand and founded their own businesses. This US based trend has also reached Switzerland.

Every fourth new company is founded by a woman

STARTUPS.CH survey shows in 2013 every fourth company was founded by a woman. Michele Blasucci from STARTUPS.CH estimates that around half of these start-ups are fouded by mothers who want to become self-employed. In Germany 40% of the start-ups are already attributed to women. The Migros Magazine spoke with three mompreneurs who have managed to combine family and entrepreneurship. In this article, Clivia Koch explains why she decided to take this step to be self-employment. Highly qualified women often have a hard time returning to their job after maternity leave because part-time jobs are rarely possible. And even when getting a part time job is often not taken seriously in the work force.

Short commutes, flexible hours and the freedom to also turn down work are some of the factors that really are importent to mompreneurs, so Blasucci. Also mompreneurs also express the desire to discover a new career path in this new phase of life.

It not only takes a lot of effort and enthusiasm to found a company but also a thorough market- and competitive analysis is necessary. Also an elaborate business plan is a key component to starting your company. Our STARTUPS.CH experts are happy to advise you and you also can visit one of our founders workshops.
