Winner

Basel-based start-up Koring won the KTI Start-up Label (Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation) in September together with three other startups. To even qualify for this label a professional coach already coached the startups during 6-24 months. The coaching was split into three phases from advising the startups on how to promote their idea over getting the product ready for the market until actually entering market in the implementation phase.

Surgeon Dr. Philipp Kirchhoff founded Koring and also won the STARTUPS.CH Award in September 2012. Since then Koring has really taken off. The Koring is already being produced and sold Switzerland. Since July 2014, the Koring is also sold in Germany and Austria.

Simple solution

While working at the University Hospital Basel Kirchhoff developed a solution for complications while placing colostomy (stoma) into patient. A stoma may be necessary when patients are suffering from colon cancer or stomach/intestinal infections. Sometimes after placing the stoma in the colon disturbing and painful abdominal wall weakness occur around the stoma. Each year, 300’000 people get a stoma and every third-treated patient as a negative result gets hernia. The solution Kirchhoff developed is a ring implant (Koring) that is sewn into the skin layers and supports the skin to prevent hernia.

You can find more information about Koring on their official website.
