July foundation report: strong regional differences
In July 2024, 4548 start-ups were registered in Switzerland. This corresponds to an increase of 6.46% compared to the previous year. Compared to June, the start-up figures are relatively constant and show only a slight decrease of 1.13%.
2024 vs. 2023
The number of start-ups in Switzerland remains positive compared to the previous year. Between January and July of this year, 31,657 new companies were founded, which corresponds to an increase of 2.72 %. Compared to the previous year (30,818), 839 more companies were founded.
Eastern Switzerland enjoys the holidays
In July, 486 start-ups were registered in Eastern Switzerland, a decrease of 21.36 % compared to the previous month (June: 618 start-ups). The number of start-ups in the canton of Thurgau fell the most, from 143 to 74, almost halving. Compared to the previous year, however, the number of start-ups in Eastern Switzerland only fell by 4.89%.
Central Switzerland also recorded an 11.47% drop in start-ups compared to the previous month. Compared to July of the previous year, this corresponds to a fall of 2.40%.
Hardly any fluctuations in Zurich and Northwestern Switzerland
In Zurich, there was an increase of 4.17% compared to the previous month. This means that they remain constant compared to other regions. However, the 899 start-ups represent an increase of 11.54% compared to last year.
Northwestern Switzerland had even smaller fluctuations with a decrease of 1.49%. With 989 start-ups, you are again just below the 1000 mark. Compared to the previous year, there was a slight increase of 0.71%.
Ticino in the fast lane
After a relatively weak June, we recorded a significant increase in the number of start-ups in July. Compared to the previous month, this corresponds to an increase of 30.19 %. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 26.22 %.
Growth was also recorded again in French-speaking Switzerland. The 1,357 new start-ups correspond to an increase of 7.10 % in direct comparison with June. The canton of Geneva recorded a remarkable increase in the number of start-ups of almost 50 % from 236 to 347.
Outlook
The declines forecast for July turned out to be lower than expected. It remains to be seen whether the number of start-ups, which has been stable since April this year, will remain at this level or, as in previous years, will show a decline in August.
