Foundation report June: Into the summer with momentum
Across Switzerland, 4600 foundations were counted in June 2024. This result corresponds to an increase of 3.14% compared to the previous month. However, a comparison with the previous year showed a decrease of 6.98%.
2024 vs. 2023
The half-year comparison is better than in the previous year. Between January and June of this year, 27109 new companies were founded, compared to 26546 in the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 2.12% at the end of June.
Zurich and Eastern Switzerland step on the gas
The month-on-month increase was particularly strong in Zurich, where 10.50% more start-ups were registered than in May. The number of new start-ups totalled 863, which corresponds to a slight increase of 0.23% compared to the previous year.
Eastern Switzerland also saw 11.55% more companies founded than in May, with 618 start-ups. St.Gallen accounted for the largest number of new companies, with 260 foundations resulting in a change of +7.00% compared to the previous month.
Increases in Central and Northwestern Switzerland
Central Switzerland was busy with start-ups, resulting in an increase of 6.16% compared to the previous month. Of the 689 new start-ups, 286 were in the canton of Zug. With an increase of 8.75% compared to May and 16.73% compared to the previous year, the canton of Zug had the highest number of start-ups in the region.
With a total of 1004 start-ups, Northwestern Switzerland just managed to break the 1000 mark, which corresponds to a difference of +0.6 percentage points compared to the previous month. With 411 foundations, Bern was clearly the canton with the highest number of start-ups, which is also reflected in the increase of 11.38% compared to May.
Dark clouds over Ticino
June 2024 was not a strong month for start-ups in Ticino. Compared to the previous month, the number of start-ups fell by 20.10% and the difference compared to June 2023 was 26.39%. The number of new start-ups thus totalled 159.
No growth was recorded in French-speaking Switzerland either and the 1267 new start-ups correspond to a decline of 0.94% compared to May.
Outlook
As expected, there was an increase in new foundations in June compared to the previous month, which amounted to 3.14 percentage points and in the current calendar year there were 2.12% more foundations than in the previous year. In recent years, there has been a decline in new business start-ups in July, which is also expected for the coming July.
