Foundation Report June 2023: Nearly passing the 5,000 mark

The number of startups in Switzerland in June 2023 was 4945, an increase of 22.28% compared to the previous month. Also compared to last June, a growth of 10.13% was recorded.

Northwestern Switzerland catches up

The French-speaking part of Switzerland also won this month with 1356 start-ups and an increase of 17.71% compared to May. Even measured against last year, 8.57% more companies were founded, making this a successful foundation month for the top performer. Nevertheless, it could not lull itself into a sense of security, because Northwestern Switzerland grew strongly in June. From 887 start-ups in May, it jumped to a new total of 1208, registering a growth of 36.19%. This resulted in 13.64% more company formations than last year. A large part of the growth was driven by Bern, as there were 53.42% more startups than in May, resulting in 494 new companies formed in the canton.

Eastern and Central Switzerland follow the trend

Start-ups were also boosted in Eastern Switzerland, achieving a result of 613. The region thus performed 23.09 percentage points better than last month and 14.79% better than in June 2022. Most of the start-ups were in the canton of St.Gallen, where 259 new companies were founded. In Schaffhausen, an increase of 88.00% was recorded and the number of startups increased from 25 to 47.
Central Switzerland showed a similar picture: with 691 new startups, the increase was 17.32% compared to last month and 6.80% measured against the previous year. First place was shared by Lucerne and Zug, which both reported exactly 245 newly founded companies. Lucerne was particularly impressive due to its strong growth of 37.64% in direct comparison with May 2023.

Zurich and Ticino back on their feet

After these two regions were not quite able to follow the positive trend of last month, the figures developed in a more positive direction in June. Zurich, for example, saw an increase of 15.11% and the total number of new companies was 861, compared to 9.68% less last June. Ticino increased its performance by 27.06%, creating 216 new companies. This figure was similar to last year’s result, when the number was 212.

Outlook

In June, the previous year’s figures were exceeded by 10.13%, thus fulfilling last month’s hopes. Particularly impressive was the increase of 901 start-ups compared to the already strong previous month of May. With a number of 4945 start-ups, June slipped just past the 5,000 mark. For July, we hope that the positive trend will continue and that we can expect another strong summer month.
