In February 2023, a total of 4,429 companies were founded in Switzerland. This represents an increase of about 13% compared to the previous month and an increase of about 5% compared to the previous year.
Positive trend continues
After a good start into 2023, the positive trend continues in February. With a total of 4,429 new businesses formed, the number is up 13% month-over-month and up 5% year-over-year.
Stable trend in Northwestern Switzerland
Northwestern Switzerland shows a stable trend in its startup numbers. In February 2023, 1,007 new companies were founded. This represents an increase of 1% compared to the previous month, but a decrease of 17% compared to the previous year.
The canton of Aargau recorded a total of 268 startups in January 2023, while there was an increase to 281 startups in February 2023. In comparison, 232 startups were registered in February 2022. The canton of Basel Stadt recorded a total of 136 startups in January 2023, while there was a decrease to 125 startups in February 2023. In February 2022, 92 startups were recorded there. Basel Land Canton recorded a total of 116 startups in January 2023, while there was a slight decrease to 109 startups in February 2023. In February 2022, 108 startups were recorded there.
Slight decrease in eastern Switzerland
In February 2023, a total of 547 companies were founded in Eastern Switzerland. This represents a slight decrease of 2% compared to the previous month and a decrease of 2% compared to the previous year.
In Eastern Switzerland, the canton of St. Gallen recorded a total of 222 startups in January 2023, while there was an increase to 236 startups in February 2023. In February 2022, 261 startups were recorded there. The canton of Thurgau recorded a total of 127 startups in January 2023, while there was a slight decrease to 120 startups in February 2023. In February 2022, 136 startups were recorded there.
Strong increase in French-speaking Switzerland
French-speaking Switzerland recorded a strong increase in startups in February 2023. A total of 1,259 new businesses were founded, up 19% from the previous month and up 4% from a year earlier.
The canton of Vaud recorded a total of 404 startups in January 2023, while there was an increase to 426 startups in February 2023. This compares to 428 startups in February 2022. In Geneva, a total of 242 startups were recorded in January 2023, while there was a sharp increase to 366 startups in February 2023. In February 2022, 336 startups were recorded there.
Renewed increase in Ticino
The positive trend also continues in Ticino. In February 2023, a total of 223 new companies were founded, an increase of 16% compared to the previous month and an increase of 16% compared to the previous year.
Outlook
February 2023 again shows a positive trend in startup numbers. Particularly encouraging is the strong increase in French-speaking Switzerland and the renewed rise in Ticino. Whether this trend will continue remains to be seen.
