In August 2024, 3558 new companies were registered in Switzerland. This corresponds to a decrease of 3.52% compared to the previous year. Compared to July, the number of start-ups fell sharply in August, as in recent years. We have a decrease of 21.77%.

2024 vs. 2023

The number of start-ups in Switzerland continues to develop positively compared to the previous year.  Between January and August of this year, 35,215 new companies were founded, which corresponds to an increase of 2.05 %. Compared to the previous year (34,506), 709 more companies were founded.

Eastern Switzerland loses the least

In August, 461 start-ups were registered in Eastern Switzerland, which corresponds to a decrease of 5.14% compared to the previous month. The number of start-ups in the canton of Thurgau rose by 45.95% from 74 to 108. Compared to the previous year, the number of start-ups in Eastern Switzerland increased, but only by 1.77%. However, it must also be said that Eastern Switzerland had a comparatively weak month in July.

Central Switzerland also recorded a below-average decline in start-ups with -14.75% compared to the previous month. Compared to August of the previous year, this corresponds to growth of 3.79%.

Sharp decline for Zurich, north-east Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland

In Zurich, there was a decrease of 20.80% compared to the previous month. This value corresponds approximately to the average in Switzerland compared to the previous month. However, the 712 start-ups represent an above-average decrease of 6.93% compared to last year.

Northwestern Switzerland had to contend with an even sharper decline of 26.29%. With 729 start-ups in August 2024, they are also 5.94% worse off than in the previous year. The picture is very similar in French-speaking Switzerland, with 1007 start-ups in August, just shy of the 1000 mark. Compared to the previous month, this corresponds to a decrease of 25.79%. In the previous year, the company recorded 4.91% more start-ups.

Low-flying in Ticino

In August, 129 companies were founded in Ticino. This corresponds to a decline of 37.68% compared to July. No other region recorded a sharper decline compared to the previous month. However, the comparison with the previous year is only slightly above average. While there was a decline of 3.52% throughout Switzerland, Ticino recorded a decline of 4.44%.

Outlook for the future

August was very similar to previous years. It can therefore be assumed that the figures will rise significantly again in the coming months, as in previous years. We are therefore preparing ourselves for a September with many start-ups.
