In August\n2021, a total of 3240 companies were founded in Switzerland. The number of\nstartups decreased by 26.94% compared to July 2021 and by 2.61% compared to\nAugust 2020.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Only\naround 3000 foundations in August<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As is the case every year, the number of startups declined significantly in August. Last month, a total of 3240 companies were newly registered in the commercial register. Compared to July 2021, the number of company formations decreased by 1195 startups (-26.94%). In comparison with August 2020, the decline amounts to 87 startups (-2.61%). The decrease affects all language regions. Compared to the previous month, the number of newly founded companies fell by 716 startups (-24.36%) in German-speaking Switzerland, by 419 startups (-32.11%) in French-speaking Switzerland and by 60 startups (-31.41%) in Ticino. In comparison with the previous year, the decline amounts to 12 startups (-0.54%) in German-speaking Switzerland, 49 startups (-5.24%) in French-speaking Switzerland and 26 startups (-16.56%) in Ticino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significant\ndecrease compared to previous month<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Compared to July 2021, the number of startups dropped significantly in almost all cantons. A look at the cantons with high foundation numbers shows that the decrease amounts to 86 startups (-31.05%) in Aargau, 111 startups (-31.01%) in Berne, 40 startups (-11.83%) in Geneva, 70 startups (-35. 35%) in Lucerne, 66 startups (-27.05%) in St.Gallen, 60 startups (-31.41%) in Ticino, 123 startups (-28.15%) in Vaud, 21 startups (-7.98%) in Zug and 163 startups (-20.74%) in Zurich. Relatively speaking, the number of newly founded companies fell most significantly in the canton of Jura, with 21 fewer startups (-63.64%). Only the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden (+3 startups or +50.00%) and Schaffhausen (+12 startups or +44.44%) show an increase in their foundation figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zero-sum game compared to previous year<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A comparison with the startup figures for August 2020 shows few changes. Of the cantons with high foundation numbers Aargau (-20 startups or -9.48%), Lucerne (-23 startups or -15.23%), St.Gallen (-6 startups or -3.26%), Ticino (-26 startups or -16.56%) and Vaud (-12 startups or -3.68%) have recorded slight decreases. In contrast, the number of startups improved in the cantons of Berne (+1 startup or +0.41%), Geneva (+21 startups or +7.58%), Zug (+43 startups or +21.61%) and Zurich (+17 startups or +2.81%). In the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Jura and Nidwalden, this year’s foundation figures for August are identical to those of the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The above-mentioned decline in the foundation figures is not a cause for concern, as a low in the number of newly founded companied is quite common in August. Experience shows that the foundation figures will rise again towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
