In May 2021, 3895 companies were founded in Switzerland. The foundation figures have thus reached their annual low. Although the figures of May 2020 were exceeded by 17.35%, the number of newly founded companies fell by 10.91% compared to April 2021. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Foundation\nfigures at annual low<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\nfoundation figures have once again arrived at their annual low. In May 2021, a\ntotal of 3895 companies were founded in Switzerland. Although the figures for\nMay 2020 were exceeded by 576 startups (+17.35%), the numbers fell by 477 startups\n(-10.91%) compared to April 2021. The regional distribution shows a similar\npicture. Compared to the previous year, the foundation numbers have increased\nin all three language regions. The increase amounts to 236 startups (+10.15%)\nin German-speaking Switzerland, 295 startups (+34.26%) in French-speaking\nSwitzerland and 45 startups (+33.58%) in Ticino. Compared to the previous\nmonth, however, the number of company foundations fell in all language regions.\nThe decrease amounts to 393 startups (-13.31%) in German-speaking Switzerland,\n47 startups (-3.91%) in French-speaking Switzerland and 37 startups (-17.13%)\nin Ticino. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predominantly\npositive results compared to previous year<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Compared to May 2020, the number of newly founded companies increased in a majority of the cantons. Most notably, the cantons with strong foundation rates recorded positive results. In the cantons of Aargau (+30 startups or +13.51%), Berne (+36 startups or +11.36%), Geneva (+115 startups or +48.52%), Lucerne (+46 startups or +31.51%), St.Gallen (+37 startups or +25.87%), Ticino (+45 startups or +33.58%), Vaud (+90 startups or +31.14%), Zug (+21 startups or +12.80%) and Zurich (+40 startups or +6.25%) there where significantly more company foundations than last month. The most significant increases were recorded in the cantons of Glarus (+12 startups or +92.31%) and Valais (+92 startups or +73.60%). On the other hand, the number of new companies fell in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (-5 startups or -14.71%), Jura (-10 startups or -33.33%), Nidwalden (-1 startup or -4.35%), Obwalden (-3 startups or -13.04%), Solothurn (-8 startups or -7.48%), Schwyz (-13 startups or -13.13%) and Thurgau (-9 startups or -8.65%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cantons\nwith strong foundation rates as biggest losers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The comparison of the foundation figures for April and May 2021 shows a mixed picture. While the numbers decreased significantly in the cantons with strong foundation rates, some cantons in western and central Switzerland managed to improve their results. The foundation figures fell in particular in the cantons of Aargau (-12 startups or -4.55%), Berne (-63 startups or -15.14%), Geneva (-14 startups or -3.83%), St. Gallen (-48 startups or -21.05%), Ticino (-37 startups or -17.13%), Vaud (-46 startups or -10.82%), Zug (-71 startups or -27.73%) and Zurich (-95 startups or -12.26%). Of the cantons with strong foundation rates only the canton of Lucerne managed to improve its previous numbers by one foundation (+0.52%). By far the largest increase was recorded in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden with 13 additional startups (+81.25%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
