One last time, the year 2020 is good for a surprise. In December 2020,\nfor the first time, there were more than 5000 company foundations in one month.\nThe new record value is 5069 startups. Thus, the results of the previous year\nwere exceeded by 15.10% and those of November 2020 even by 21.41%.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over\n5000 new companies founded<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the\nfirst time since the beginning of the records of STARTUPS.CH in 2013, there\nwere more than 5000 new companies founded in one month. With a total of 5069 additions,\nit is the month with the highest number of foundations ever. December 2020 thus\nreplaces July 2020 as the record holder. December 2019’s results were surpassed\nby a whopping 665 startups, or 15.10%. Compared to November 2020, the numbers have\nrisen by 894 startups. This represents an increase of 21.41% compared to the\nprevious month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declining\nnumbers only in Ticino<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The individual language regions report predominantly positive results as well. Compared to the previous month, the number of startups rose by 627 in German-speaking Switzerland (+21.82%), by 249 in French-speaking Switzerland (+22.37%) and by 18 in Ticino (+9.57%). Although Ticino was able to surpass the result of November 2020, the figures of the previous year were not met again. Compared to December 2020, there were 26 fewer startups (-11.21%) in Ticino. In contrast, German-speaking Switzerland (+583 startups or +19.98%) and French-speaking Switzerland (+108 startups or +8.61%) also managed to exceed the previous year’s results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only three\ncantons show lower figures than in November<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the exception of the canton of Lucerne, the cantons with usually high foundation numbers are all showing increased results compared to the previous month. There was an rise in the cantons of Aargau (+44 startups or +17.53%), Berne (+95 startups or +26.61%), Geneva (+19 startups or +5.16%), St.Gallen (+106 startups or +55.79%), Vaud (+83 startups or +24.06%), Zug (+33 startups or +12.36%) and Zurich (+151 startups or +20.27%). Furthermore, the canton of Uri stands out, with an increase of 155.56% due to the 14 additional start-ups in December 2020. Only in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (-4 startups or -11.43%), Lucerne (-34 startups or -12.64%) and Schaffhausen (-2 startups or -6.25%) has there been a decline in foundation numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous\nyear’s figures exceeded by over 15 percent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the cantons with usually high foundation numbers also succeeded in improving their results compared to the previous year. The cantons of Aargau (+32 startups or +12.17%), Berne (+61 startups or +15.60%), Geneva (+20 startups or +5.45%), St.Gallen (+75 startups or +33.94%), Zug (+48 startups or +19.05%) and Zurich (+173 startups or +23.93%) display improved results.. However, the values fell in the cantons of Jura (-7 startups or -14.58%), Schaffhausen (-8 startups or -21.05%), Ticino (-26 startups or -11.21%) and Vaud (-1 startup or -0.23%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
