The rollercoaster ride continues: never before were as many records broken as in 2020. With a total of 3788 company foundations, September 2020 is now the strongest September since the beginning of STARTUPS.CH’s records. The 2019 figure was surpassed by more than 18 percent. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Strong\nSeptember<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nSeptember 2020, 3788 new companies were founded. This represents an increase of\n461 start-ups (13.86%) compared to August 2020 and 583 start-ups (18.19%)\ncompared to the previous year. The language regions benefited from this\ndevelopment as well and show consistently positive results. Compared to the\nprevious month, the number of new companies in German-speaking Switzerland\nincreased by 13.56% (+303 companies), in French-speaking Switzerland by 14.97%\n(+140 companies) and in Ticino by 11.46% (+18 companies). A comparison of said\nresults with those of September 2019 shows a similar picture. The increase\namounts to 19.1% (+407 companies) in German-speaking Switzerland, 17.87% (+163 companies)\nin French-speaking Switzerland and 8.02% (+13 companies) in Ticino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cantons\neager to found new companies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cantons with usually strong foundation numbers have once again increased their results significantly. If we compare the current figures with those of the previous month, we see that there was an increase of 30.49% (+75 companies) in Berne, 22.74% (+63 companies) in Geneva, 8.7% (+16 companies) in St.Gallen, 10.74% (+35 companies) in Vaud and 17.49% (+106 companies) in Zurich. Compared to September of the previous year, there was an increase of 23.94% (+62 companies) in Berne, 25.93% (+70 companies) in Geneva, 6.95% (+13 companies) in St.Gallen, 9.06% (+30 companies) in Vaud and 22.34% (+130 companies) in Zurich. Furthermore, the canton of Jura stands out, with an increase of 166.67% (+20 companies) compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decline\nin Obwalden and Schaffhausen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a few cantons recorded declines last month. The decrease is most significant in the canton of Obwalden, where compared to August 2020 9 companies less (-39.13%) were founded. Also affected are the cantons of Schaffhausen (-6 companies or -19.35%), Uri (-3 companies or -33.33%), Appenzell Inner Rhodes (-2 foundations or -22.22%), Valais (-1 company or -0.65%) and Zug (-1 company or -0.5%). Compared to September 2019, only the cantons of Schaffhausen (-9 companies or -26.47%), Grisons (-3 companies or -4.35%) and Appenzell Inner Rhodes (-2 companies or -22.22%) show negative results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These results show that the increase at the end of the year, which usually begins in September, has slowly started again (see graph). But so far, the year 2020 has been good for several surprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
