The Startup report July 2016 registered a total of 3,537 new companies \u00a0in the Commercial Register.<\/strong> This represents a decline of 3.52% compared to the figures of July 2015. Startup report July 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Startup report July 2016 registered a total of 3,537 new legal entities in the Commercial Register in July. This represents a significant decline of 13.18% on the previous month’s figures. However, June 2016 was an extremely active month for start-ups (cf. Start-up Report June 2016<\/a>). And, of course, July sees the start of the summer holidays – another reason why the significant decline in new registrations is hardly surprising.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the July 2016 figure represents a 3.52% decline on the July 2015 figure, when a total of 3,666 companies were registered. The second half of 2016 has, therefore, got off to a poor start. This is not in line with expectations, as H1 2016 was, in fact, a very active period for newly established companies (cf. Start-up Report First Half of 2016<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Limited liability companies, public limited companies and sole traders predominate<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Most new formations are set up as GmbHs (limited liability companies). A total of 1,340 limited liability companies were established in Switzerland in June 2016, representing 37.89% of all start-ups that month. At 1,002 new registrations and 28.33% of the total, sole traders follow quite some distance behind. The third most popular choice for company formations was the public limited company. Some 870 public limited companies were registered, representing 24.6% of the total. These three legal formats account for 90.81% of all new registrations. Limited partnerships (2.69%) and branch offices (2.94%) account for most of the remainder of new registrations in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Comparison by canton<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The canton of Zurich recorded no fewer than 666 new formations, achieving a record share of all the new registrations in Switzerland (18.83%). The canton of Vaud appears much further down the list at 9.78%. The canton of Bern managed once again to increase its share of Swiss formations, achieving a percentage of 8.14%, and taking over third place from Geneva (7.72%).<\/p>\n
