Switzerland Once Again Honoured as the World’s Most Innovative National Economy

In 2018, too, Switzerland was honoured as the most innovative country of the world, winning this title for seven years in a row. This is shown by the 2018 Global Innovation Index (GII), an annual ranking of the world’s most innovative national economies.

Most Patents per Capita Worldwide

The 2018 Global Innovation Index (GII) concludes that Switzerland is the most innovative national economy of the countries under review. It is not the first time, however, when Switzerland is awarded this distinction. It has already been topping the GII ranking list since 2011. This year 68.4 out of 100 points were achieved, which places Switzerland five points ahead of the Netherlands and Sweden.

According to the 2018 GII, Switzerland’s excellent innovativeness can largely be explained with its inventions. In 2017 alone 7283 patent applications were filed, which accounts for 884 per million residents. With this figure, Switzerland comes first. Other major factors co-determining Switzerland’s success include its high-tech production, high R&D investments and outstanding university landscape.

Europe as the Most Innovative Continent

Switzerland is followed by the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom. As a non-European country, Singapore ranks only fifth. As far as innovativeness is concerned, Europe stands out because 11 of the first 20 countries come from the European continent. The US ranks sixth and China seventeenth.

Compiled in cooperation with the Cornell University, INSEAD und the UN World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Global Innovation Index (GII) is published every year. It reviews 126 national economies, which represent 90.8% of the world population and 96.3% of the world’s gross domestic product. The ranking comprises 80 indicators such as spending on education and research, loan accessibility, productivity per worker, technical manufacturing, quality of scientific publications and universities, political stability and foreign direct investment.
