Swiss Venture Capital Report

In 2014, Swiss start-ups were successful on many levels. On the one side, over 40,000 companies were founded in 2014 (see blog entry), and on the other, new Swiss technology firms received CHF 457 million from investors in 92 financing rounds. This corresponds to an increase in invested capital of 10% with a constant number of financing rounds.

Strong Medtech Start-Ups

Various sectors experienced different developments. The companies that have grown especially strongly are those from the fields of medicine technology, biotech and pharmacy. More than three quarters of the total invested sum was channelled into medtech. The invested sum rose from CHF 90 million in 2013 to CHF 150 million in 2014. The investments in IT firms decreased by CHF 5 million even though the number of financing rounds in the sector rose from 30 to 45.

Financing Gaps in Medium Investment Sums

Small financing rounds have grown strongly. The number of financing rounds of CHF 1 million doubled from 2013 to 2014. This resulted in the number of financing rounds between CHF 2 million and CHF 10 million decreasing drastically. High-tech start-ups looking for fast global growth are therefore at a disadvantage in Switzerland. The 2014 financing round median is at CHF 1.8 million and is lower than the previous year.

Vaud Canton is Ahead

Start-ups from the Vaud canton received around CHF 200 million of new capital in the financing rounds. This allows it to take first place, with Zurich in second place with CHF 130 million. The ranking is continued with Geneva at CHF 60 million and then Basel with CHF 40 million. In terms of the number rounds of financing, Zurich is in the lead with 43. Of these 43 rounds in Zurich, only 27 can be attributed to the IT sector.
