Recovery from the summer slump

In August 2015, very few new legal forms were entered into the commercial register. Following this summer lull, however, came September 2015 with a total of 3,151 new entries. This corresponds to an increase of 547 start-ups (+ 21.01%).

Compared to September 2014, the number of new entries in September 2015 increased by 0.25% and was fairly constant. This constant number of start-ups compared to last year is very encouraging because it shows that despite the difficult economic environment, entrepreneurship in Switzerland is not on the retreat.

Popular legal forms

Sole proprietorships are the most popular legal form for new entries in September 2015. In total, 1,121 sole proprietorships were entered into the commercial register. This corresponds to a share of 35.58% of all new entries. This means that sole proprietorships have overtaken the GmbH, whose share is 34.91% and AGs, which make up 20.50% of all new entries. The reasons for the popularity of sole proprietorships may be down to the simple and cost-efficient founding process since no starting capital is required.

Western Switzerland doing well

When looking at the various regions of Switzerland, one thing stands out above all; Western Switzerland is doing well in terms of newly established companies. When compared to September 2014, the cantons of Western Switzerland recorded an increase of 3.60%. German-speaking Switzerland and the canton of Ticino both showed a decline of 1.01% compared to the previous year. In German-speaking Switzerland, this decline can be traced to strong fluctuations in the cantons with low numbers of residents. More detailed information on the growth of the individual cantons can be found in the following table.
