Is it possible to translate the firm name (sole proprietorship, general partnership, GmbH, AG) into a foreign language?

The Commercial Registry Decree as well as the competent authority have set up a number of rules which are to be abided by:

  • A foreign-language version can only be registered if written in roman alphabet.
  • The content of all versions must be congruent!
  • Fancy names or denominations which combine different notions resulting in a fancy description cannot be translated.
  • Sequences of letters which are not shortcuts cannot be translated.

You are free to translate only the legal form or the whole name (if allowed). However, you have to chose whether to translate all versions or none of them.

If you have further questions, the STARTUPS.CH team will be glad to help you.
