How to retroactively apply for compensation for corona-damages

Many self-employed persons and owners of a Company limited by Shares or Limited Liability Company can work again, but have considerable losses in turnover due to the corona measures. To support them, they can apply for corona compensation retroactively as of 17 September 2020.

Compensation for self-employed persons

The prerequisites to claim compensation as a self-employed person are as follows:

  • Your business has been closed based on cantonal or federal measures, or has alternatively been affected by cantonal or federal prohibition of events.
  • You have suffered a large reduction in your turnover as a result of the measures. The reduction must amount to at least 55% of the average monthly turnover from 2015-2019.
  • Your income subject to AHV contributions was at least CHF 10’000 in 2019.

A claim can be made as soon as all prerequisites are met. The entitlement for compensation remains in force until the end of the measures or until the end of the reduction in income.

The amount of the compensation depends on your AHV subjected income from 2019 and is calculated as follows:

(AHV subjected income of 2019 x 0.80)/360 = Compensation per day

The maximum daily rate is CHF 196, which corresponds to an AHV subjected income in 2019 of CHF 88’200.

If your company has employees, you can apply for short-time work compensation for your employees. However, for yourself you must apply for compensation for self-employed persons, according to the conditions outlined above.

Compensation for persons in employer-like situations

Persons in similar positions to employers are persons with a management function, as well as their spouses and registered partners working in the company. The prerequisites to claim compensation as a person in a similar position to employers are as follows:

  • Your business has been closed based on cantonal or federal measures, or has alternatively been affected by cantonal or federal prohibition of events.
  • You have suffered a large reduction in your turnover as a result of the measures. The reduction must amount to at least 55% of the average monthly turnover from 2015-2019.
  • Your income subject to AHV contributions was at least CHF 10’000 in 2019.

A claim can be made as soon as all prerequisites are met. The entitlement for compensation remains in force until the end of the measures or until the end of the reduction in income.

The amount of the compensation depends on your AHV subjected income from 2019 and the actual loss of income.

The maximum daily rate is CHF 196, which corresponds to an AHV subjected income in 2019 of CHF 88’200.

Application for compensation

The application must be submitted to the compensation office through which you settle your AHV contributions. The first possible compensation-payment is scheduled for December 2020. Depending on the canton, applications can be submitted digitally through an online application form.

Please note that an application must be submitted every month. The only exception is the period from the 17. September 2020 to the 31. October 2020, where a single cumulative application is sufficient.
